Pending:

  • COMING SOON
    Evening with CSI
    I am negotiating a date with a very busy Detective from the Delaware State Police, for him to come out and speak to Delaware Mensa about Crime Scene Investigation techniques. Popular shows like the various CSI series have made crime scene investigation and forensics well-known in the general public. We will find out what's true, what's TV myth, and how CSI affect our lives.
    THIS EVENT WILL LIKELY OCCUR NEAR THE END OF NOVEMBER, OR IN DECEMBER. Keep an eye on our Yahoo! board if you are interested in attending.  If you are not a member of our Yahoo! board, visit  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DelawareMensa/ to sign up.

  • POSTPONED – BLACK MARKET KNITTING
    nbsp;
    During WWII, my great-great uncle had a thriving black-market business in his Army service in Europe. Meat? - no. Cigarettes? - no.  Booze? – no (his still was too heavy to carry around). Playing Cards? - no (although he said the new plastic ones would have been a huge hit...).

    Socks. Yes, socks. His mother had insisted that all her children learn to sew, cook and knit well; and he was >very< good at knitting socks. And scarves, and hats and gloves. Many soldiers received gifts, lovingly knit, which just - weren't quite - what they needed. My uncle would, for a fee, unravel, redesign and knit-to-fit anything anyone wanted to pay him to do!

    Socks made him the most money, as you can guess...an army marches on its feet (apologies to Napoleon). Several ladies in Germany insisted he was holding the yarn incorrectly, so he learned that method as well.

    Then, he taught me to knit....which means I don't have any of the fancy techniques in the books - but I can make almost anything. Ever knitted? Never knitted? Drop in and I'll have needles, yarn, simple patterns and some easy lessons (or bring your own goodie to start...) My husband will show off his neck-warmer, carefully designed to use while riding motorcycles and working in ship rigging; and easy to make. Of course we'll have some food.
